The jazz music played softly in the background, a mellow counterpoint to the gentle rain pattering against the windowpane. Chloe was curled up on the sofa, a book open in her lap, the weight of the blanket a familiar comfort. The smell of freshly brewed coffee permeated the air.

"No way," Liam said, his voice curt. "We both know I'm the only one who cleans around here. A pet would just mean more work."

Chloe sighed quietly, the warmth within her body diminishing. The image of a playful puppy, bounding through the apartment, faded. She slowly closed her book and put it on the table.
